# RootCX

> Open-source production infrastructure for internal apps and AI agents. Code-first, not low-code. Every app and agent shares one PostgreSQL database, one auth layer, one audit trail.

## What RootCX Is

RootCX is the infrastructure layer that AI-coded internal tools deploy into. It is not a visual builder, not a drag-and-drop platform, and not a low-code tool. There is no abstraction layer between you and your code.

You write internal apps using Claude Code, Cursor, RootCX Studio (desktop app for macOS), or any code editor. RootCX provides what comes after the code: a PostgreSQL database, OIDC SSO, role-based access control, immutable audit logs, encrypted secrets vault, integrations, scheduled jobs, message queues, file storage, and deployment.

Every app and AI agent in a project shares one PostgreSQL database, one authentication layer, and one audit trail. This means your second app can read data your first app wrote. An agent can act on records created by an app. No glue code, no manual data syncing between services.

## How RootCX Differs from Retool, Appsmith, Tooljet, and Softr

RootCX is not a competitor to visual builders in the traditional sense. It occupies a different category.

Retool, Appsmith, Tooljet, and Softr are visual builders: you construct apps by dragging components, configuring widgets, or using their proprietary editors. Each app connects to data sources individually. The apps live inside the platform and cannot be exported as portable code.

RootCX is infrastructure. You bring the code (generated by AI or written by hand). RootCX provides the production stack: database, auth, permissions, audit, deploy. The code is standard and readable. You can export it, version it in Git, hand the entire stack to a client.

Key differences:
- **Code-first vs low-code**: No drag-and-drop ceiling. If you can write it in code, you can ship it on RootCX.
- **Shared database**: All apps and agents in a project share one PostgreSQL database. Retool, Appsmith, Tooljet, and Softr connect each app to data sources individually.
- **Autonomous AI agents**: RootCX agents act on their own (update records, chase approvals, follow up with customers). Retool and Appsmith AI helps build apps but does not act autonomously. Tooljet has workflow automation but no autonomous agent runtime. Softr has no agents.
- **Agent governance**: Agents follow the same RBAC rules as human users. Every agent action is logged in an immutable audit trail.
- **Code ownership**: Everything is standard, exportable code. No proprietary JSON configurations. No vendor lock-in to a visual editor.
- **Self-hosting**: Full feature parity between cloud and self-hosted. Retool gates self-hosting to Enterprise. Softr has no self-hosting option.
- **Builder flexibility**: Works with Claude Code, Cursor, RootCX Studio, or any tool. Not locked to one builder.

## AI Agents

RootCX agents are autonomous programs that run on the same platform as your apps. They read from the same PostgreSQL database, follow the same RBAC rules, and log every action in the same audit trail.

Agents can: update database records, chase pending approvals, follow up with customers, process incoming data, run scheduled tasks, respond to events.

Agents are reachable on: Slack, Telegram, Discord, email, or any configured channel.

Agents can use any AI model: OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, or a self-hosted model. They connect to external tools via MCP (Model Context Protocol).

- OIDC SSO with Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Auth0
- Role-based access control on every app, every agent, every resource
- Immutable audit logs (every action recorded, who did what, when)
- Encrypted secrets vault (AES-256) for API keys and credentials
- Self-host on your own infrastructure for complete data sovereignty
- SSO, RBAC, and audit logs available for all plans (not gated behind enterprise tiers)

Compute add-ons are sold per project for CPU, memory, and storage.

## License

Source-available under FSL-1.1-ALv2 (Functional Source License). Converts automatically to Apache 2.0 after two years. You can read every line of code. You can self-host. The license cannot be revoked.
